The School Refurbishment
Project
The Luckington School
refurbishment project, started way back in 2005, is now coming to a
conclusion. This project has included major improvements :-
-
The new hall and toilet facilities
- New reception area
- New catering kitchen
- Upgrading of the staff kitchen
- New double gazed windows in KS2 classroom and IT suite
- Upgrading of the fabric of both the KS2 classroom and the IT
suite
- Acoustic treatment of main hall
This final stage covers the provision of new
furniture for the KS2 classroom and IT suite. The objectives are
to:-
-
Improve learning outcomes
- Increase the flexibility of both rooms for use by KS1 & 2
- Provision of an ergonomic solution to the anthropometric
challenge of widely differing heights, shapes & sizes of pupils.
- Provide a contemporary environment that supports the goals
of a progressive school
- Provide a solution that will last
We have looked at a number of options and currently have on trial
(from 18th June) some chair and table chopices. These chairs and
tables offer adjustability in height and are of a design that
encourages good posture. This is particularly relevant when pupils
start to work with computers. Encouraging good posture at a young
age can lead to benefits in their continuing school careers and in
later life. An improved teacher’s workstation and storage options
are also included.
The provision of computers in the IT suite is now
essential and of course they form part of both the KS1& 2 curriculum
from here onwards. There is however one major drawback with the
current IT set up. The room can only realistically be used for
computer work and although important this is not always required.
We have therefore looked at a flexible solution to this problem
by way of “Flip Top” desks. “Flip Top” desks allow the monitor and
keyboard to be hidden under the desk top when not needed freeing up
the desk space for more traditional classroom activities. The CPU is
located under the desk top at the rear of the unit. (See images
attached).
With rising pupil numbers in KS1 it is important that we are able
to accommodate them when they reach KS2. “Flip Top” desks provide
the school with the ability for KS1 & 2 lessons, computer based or
otherwise, to be conducted in both rooms.
Standard good quality new tables would require a
lower level of investment but would only modernise what we already
have “Flip Top” desks offer the school significant benefits.
